Fife Business Matters

Preparing to succeed

Fife FSB Chair, Janet Torley, remains positive about the outlook for enterprise in Fife.

2010 - a year of huge change so far for many small businesses. We have seen some unprecedented happenings in Government with a ground-breaking Tory/LibDem coalition.

We are all being asked to tighten our belts. No matter what the pundits might

say, tough times are still the order of the day for many small businesses.

Nevertheless against a continued backdrop of redundancies and downsizing

I believe that this will become a time of growth in the small business sector with many people looking to set up their own enterprise.

However, I would add a few words of caution to anyone considering this route.

Make sure that what you are doing actually has a market, make sure that whatever you choose to do has something unique to offer and make sure that you have identified your niche before you start. Once any budding entrepreneur has got this bit right, then the journey will be challenging but rewarding in

the extreme.

And this is where the right choice of business support organisation can be vital.

In the early days, and indeed ongoing, having an organisation behind you that can act on your behalf when resources are tight can be a major advantage. I know that in my early days of business just being able to pick up the phone and speak to an FSB professional made all the difference.

But FSB is a member led organisation and your local committees are all

volunteers. We need more volunteers who would be willing to spare a very few hours a few times a year to join us on committee.

We need your knowledge and expertise to make sure we can continue to lobby and be the Voice of Small Business in Fife. Please give me a call on 01383 852931 if you want to help or come and meet our Regional Organiser, Gordon Henderson and team on Thursday 23rd September at the Fife Business Show in Rothes Halls, Onwards and upwards - there is nothing else for it!

Exclusive FSB member services include:

• Business banking with no charges

• Financial services

• Factoring

• Legal advice line

• Merchant and insurance services

• Fuel cards
